Adware
Programs installed on a person's computer that typically pop up contextual advertisements as the person surfs the Internet. The apparent distinction between adware and spyware is the assertion that the adware is installed with the full knowledge of the end user. Gator Corporation (now Claria), which many have accused of being spyware, disagrees and prefers to refer to itself as adware. The publisher of the page is not compensated for the advertisements that pop up over or under their pages.
