- Spam
-
The common term used to apply to UCE and search engine clutter. Unsolicited e-mail is a form of piracy because it shifts the cost of sending e-mail from the sender to the unfortunate companies and individuals who have to expend resources dealing with it. The lesser-known variety, search engine spam, is the process of filling up the search engines with sites that are rigged, often with stolen content, to trick the search engines to give high placement. Search engine spam is a form of piracy because it steals from the credibility of the Internet as a whole. Note that SPAM® is a registered trademark of Hormel.
